It felt like things were turning around. It did for me. The team went 8-4, a vast improvement over the previous season, the first losing season since 1961. The non-conference games weren’t spectacular - with victories over Maine, Wake Forest, and Pitt - but they were wins. Next up Nebraska beat a ranked Iowa State team in overtime.
Then came the first loss of the season, a 34-31 disappointment against Texas Tech at home. The Red Raiders took off to a 21-0 lead, but Kevin Cosgrove’s defense stiffened in the second half. Our beloved Huskers held a 31-27 lead when defensive lineman Le Kevin Smith intercepted a Tech pass, but then tried to run with it only too fumble it right back to those bastards from Lubbock.
