One of the most successful coaches in the Nebraska athletic department is stepping down, and it wasn't all his decision.

After guiding the Husker women's gymnastics for 25 seasons, Dan Kendig announced his sudden retirement Tuesday, just weeks before what would have been the start of his 26th season.

Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos told the Journal Star that Kendig's departure is not tied to any issue involving student-athlete welfare.

However, Moos said there were other things that the athletic department felt needed to be discussed.
