He's only about 5-foot-9 in an event, the high jump, in which the top performers are often well over 6 feet tall.
"If I had legs like his, I'd just kick stuff all day," said Dusty Jonas, Nebraska's volunteer high jump coach.
Those legs carried McCann to a personal best last month when he went 7-2½ at the Husker Spring Invitational. It beat his previous best by 3½ inches.
Since then, McCann has set his sights on leading one of the top groups of jumpers in the nation through the end of the season. The trek starts with Saturday's Nebraska Invitational at Ed Weir Stadium before the Big Ten outdoor championships six days later.
