Doc Sadler remembers driving to Wichita, Kansas, to visit a player his assistant coach, Wes Flanigan, had begun recruiting before virtually anyone else had.
Twice Sadler, then the Nebraska men’s basketball coach, waited late at night at the gymnasium at Sunrise Christian Academy.
One time it was after 10 p.m., and the other, the clock was approaching midnight.
Both times, Buddy Hield finally ceased his workout to talk with Sadler.
“He was a workaholic, that’s for sure,” Sadler said.
Hield even took two unofficial visits to Nebraska.
So exactly how close were the Huskers to landing Hield, who took college basketball by storm this season?
