Freshman Colby Gomes and senior Matt Waldron combined for eight shutout innings as the Nebraska baseball team closed the weekend with a 7-1 win against UC Riverside on Sunday in Riverside, California.
The Huskers (3-1) took three of four games from the Highlanders (1-3), and it was Gomes and Waldron setting the tone with their arms.
Gomes, making his first career start, scattered six hits over four innings while striking out two.
UC Riverside had no answer for Waldron, who retired the first 12 straight batters he faced. The Omaha Westside graduate struck out seven.
Waldron (1-0) kept the Highlanders in check as the Huskers expanded its lead over the later innings, working ahead in the counts against nearly every batter.
