Shavon Shields and Mattie Fowler were honored as Nebraska student-athletes of the year and Big Ten Medal of Honor winners at a recognition event Sunday.
Husker student-athletes were recognized for their performances in competition, the classroom and the community.
Shields, a senior men's basketball player, and Fowler, a senior softball player, both were four-year starters.
Shields is the first Husker basketball player to win the NU student-athlete honor. A forward from Olathe, Kansas, he earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2016. In the classroom, Shields is a two-time, first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Fowler, a Tucson, Arizona, native, has been instrumental in the Huskers’ three straight postseason appearances, including a Women's College World Series berth in 2013.
