For one thing, he played at Alabama in the early 1970s. For another, he was here in December of 1994, interviewing for the Vanderbilt head coaching position that opened when Gerry DiNardo left the Commodores to become head coach at LSU.
According to this story in The Tennessean, Riley was one of the top four candidates along with Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach Rod Dowhower, who eventually landed the position, former North Carolina State coach Dick Sheridan and former Eastern Michigan coach Ron Cooper.
