1. Few media members knew Bob Elliott as well as Randy Peterson, longtime writer for The Des Moines Register.
Elliott obviously trusted Peterson to a large degree. So much so that in 2000, as Elliott was undergoing cancer treatments while coaching defensive backs at Iowa State, he would meet weekly with Peterson on Mondays or Tuesdays to share thoughts about his health struggles.
"Bobby told me that when he died, he wanted on paper what he was going through, how he was coping with it day-to-day, how he was remaining positive," Peterson said Monday morning during an appearance on "Early Break" on 93.
