Before Bob Diaco joined Nebraska’s football staff less than a week ago as defensive coordinator, the closest he'd ever been with Mike Riley was on Sept. 19, 2009, when the two coaches spent a few hours together inside a football stadium.
Diaco was in his first and only season as defensive coordinator for Cincinnati. Riley was head coach at Oregon State.
Cincinnati held the Beavers to 344 total yards in a 28-18 victory that day in Corvallis, Oregon.
“I didn’t get all the information from Coach Riley on how it started,” Diaco said of his quick path to becoming the newest leader of the Blackshirts, “but I did bring a defense into his other institution and played them pretty well that day.
