Banwarth didn't get good first response before landing important job with Huskers

Kayla Banwarth contacted Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook when a full-time coaching job opened on the Husker staff in November, but she didn’t get a good response about her chances of landing the job.

Banwarth understood that. She’d never been a full-time coach, and Nebraska isn’t usually a training ground for those positions.

But Cook reconsidered, and announced the hiring of Banwarth on Monday. She replaces Dani Busboom Kelly, who left to be the head coach at Louisville. Banwarth is one of two full-time assistant coaches, joining third-year assistant coach Chris Tamas.

She had retired from playing and was living in California, where she’s been for many years while playing for the United States national team.
