The Nebraska Cornhuskers might have their spring game, but the Huskers are still hard at work on recruiting. Head coach Mike Riley is working on landing a strong 2017 class, and they've already landed a few quality players.
While the Huskers might not end up with the multiple five-star recruits, they are targeting several high-profile recruits this year with the hope of landing them. A big tip of the hat to 247Sports, as their rankings were used to detail the recruits' overall and position rankings. The players are listed in descending order of their overall rank. This list is only players that the Cornhuskers have a legitimate chance of landing. So while the Huskers have an offer out to five-star OT Wyatt Davis, they aren't going to land him. With that in mind, here are the top five prospects Nebraska is targeting in the 2017 recruiting class.
5. ILB Avery Roberts
Robert is a four-star middle linebacker and the No. 185 overall recruit. He's the No. 7 MLB in the class of 2017, and the Huskers are working hard to land him. While Penn State is the current favorite, Nebraska isn't far behind in second place. For more Cornhuskers recruiting coverage, download the Chat Sports App.
4. OT Alijah Vera-Tucker
The Huskers could use some offensive line help, and Vera-Tucker is one of many recruits Nebraska has extended scholarship offers to. A four-star recruit, Vera-Tucker is the No. 80 overall recruit. While Nebraska is very much in the mix here, the Washington Huskies are the current favorite to land Vera-Tucker.
3. CB Deommodore Lenoir
The Huskers are building a strong California pipeline, and Lenoir could be the next California recruit to make his way to Nebraska. Lenoir is a four-star CB and the No. 76 overall recruit. He's the No. 8 CB and No. 10 player from California. West coast teams like UCLA, Washington and Oregon are after him, but don't count out Nebraska here.
2. WR Jeff Thomas
Thomas is just 5-foot-10, 170-pounds, but is as explosive and speedy as they come. The five-star recruit is the No. 5 wide receiver and No. 27 overall recruit in the nation. He's from St. Louis, so Nebraska could benefit from being closer than most of the major programs. However, nearly every program in the nation wants Thomas and it will be a battle for his services.
1. CB Darnay Holmes
Holmes is the Huskers top target this year and he has a very bright future. The No. 6 overall recruit, Holmes is the top CB in the country, although he plays WR as well. Two of his school teammates, Keyshawn Johnson Jr. and Tristan Gebbia, have already committed to Nebraska. They are already working on convincing Holmes to join them. The Huskers have a real chance at landing Holmes, although Stanford is the favorite at the moment. Holmes will make his decision on June 23rd.
