Western Kentucky Punts on 4th-and-Goal After Getting Backed Up to 38-Yard Line

It's not every day you see a team punt on 4th-and-goal, but hey, it's bowl season.

Crazy things happen.

Late in the second quarter of the Miami Beach Bowl against South Florida, Western Kentucky drove down the field to set up a 1st-and-goal from the Bulls 6-yard line. Then the Hilltoppers moved backward—and then back some more.

They wound up so far back that they had to punt the ball on 4th-and-goal.

Here's the sequence of events:

  • 1st-and-goal at the 6-yard line: Run for no gain and a 15-yard personal foul penalty against Western Kentucky
  • 2nd-and-goal at the 21-yard line: Sack for a loss of seven yards
  • 3rd-and-goal at the 28-yard line: Sack for a loss of 10 yards
  • 4th-and-goal at the 38-yard line: Punt

That's a rough sequence, especially considering Western Kentucky was six yards away from scoring the game-tying touchdown.
