In 1969, a popular western film title “The Wild Bunch” was released and quickly caught fire to become a hit. The movie also became the inspiration for a nickname to a group of USC football players in that same year.

The defensive line of the Trojans this year dominated opponents and earned the title of “The Wild Bunch.” This group of players consisted of defensive ends Jimmy Gunn and Charles Weaver, tackles Al Cowlings and Tody Smith and middle guards Willard ‘Bubba’ Scott and Tony Terry.
