LAS VEGAS — Next month marks the 25th year of an anniversary Stacey Augmon would rather forget.
Augmon, an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, was a senior on the 1991 U.N.L.V. team that I thought, and many agreed, was among the greatest ever assembled. Those Running Rebels had won the national title a year earlier by crushing Duke by an N.C.A.A. championship-record 30 points. Augmon’s senior-led team came into its national semifinal game, again against the Blue Devils, with a 34-0 record and an average margin of victory of 29 points.
