Illinois Coach Bill Cubit was fired Saturday by the university’s new athletic director, Josh Whitman, who said the troubled program needed a new coach to work toward long-term success. Cubit, the interim coach last season, was hired as the permanent head coach in November and received a two-year contract. The Illini finished 5-7, and 2-6 in the Big Ten, last season under Cubit. The university said that Cubit would be paid $985,000.
