Harry Statham earned his record-breaking 1,099th victory as a head coach as the freshman Nate Michael scored 40 points to lead McKendree, a Division II college in Southern Illinois, to a 92-84 win over host Maryville.
Statham, 78, moved past the Tennessee women’s coach Pat Summitt for the most wins by a coach at a four-year college program. He has 476 losses during his 50 years coaching at McKendree, his alma mater.
McKendree had tremendous success under Statham at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics level, ending in 2011. Then the Bearcats moved up to Division II, where they have struggled.
