South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier Is Retiring Immediately, Reports Say

South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier told his players Monday he was retiring, effective immediately, according to multiple news media reports citing anonymous sources.

A spokesman for South Carolina did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Gamecocks, who fell to Louisiana State last week by 45-24, are 2-4 (0-4 in the Southeastern Conference) and host Vanderbilt on Saturday.

Spurrier, the winner of the 1966 Heisman Trophy as a quarterback for Florida, has been a head coach for three Division I teams for a combined 27 seasons. He helped revive the Gamecocks’ moribund program upon taking over in 2005, compiling a record of 86-49.
