Former Arizona State football player Patrick Zane Thompson was arrested Saturday after allegedly killing his family dog before placing it in a smoker.
Thompson, 42, broke the dog's neck while high on marijuana, per court documents obtained by Katie Faller of the Republic. He admitted to killing the dog while having an "episode," during which he said he believed he had to make a sacrifice to God after burning a shirt owned by his daughter, per Jonathan Lowe of AZFamily.com.
The police report indicates Thompson said he chose killing the dog over committing suicide or sacrificing his 6-year-old son.
