Notre Dame starting quarterback Malik Zaire, who had been one of the key reasons for the Irish's bright football outlook this season, suffered a right ankle injury Saturday that appeared to be serious.
Zaire, a junior, was running left on first down when his right ankle got trapped under a tackler and bent. Notre Dame was driving with 1:15 left in the third quarter, and the Irish scored on the next play.
At the time of the injury, Zaire had completed 7 of 18 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown and had rushed for 87 yards on 10 carries.
