Notre Dame starting quarterback Malik Zaire, who had been one of the key reasons for the Irish's bright football outlook this season, broke his right ankle Saturday and will miss the remainder of the season, coach Brian Kelly said.
Zaire, a junior, was running left on first down when his right ankle got trapped under a tackler and bent. Notre Dame was driving with 1:15 left in the third quarter, and the Irish scored on the next play.
At the time of the injury, Zaire had completed 7 of 18 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown and had rushed for 87 yards on 10 carries.
