The University of North Carolina announced Friday that it had received a “notice of allegations” from the N.C.A.A. stemming from a scandal, nearly two decades long, in which the athletic department is accused of directing top athletes to phony classes.
In a statement, Carol L. Folt, North Carolina’s chancellor, and Bubba Cunningham, its athletic director, said they would release the allegations as soon as a redacted version, which protects privacy rights, was available. They said they have a 90-day deadline to respond to the N.C.A.A.
The Raleigh News & Observer first reported in 2011 that two employees in the African and Afro-American studies department, including the department’s head, presided over a “shadow curriculum” of classes that rarely or never met.
