N.C.A.A. Places Louisville on Probation and Suspends Pitino

The N.C.A.A. announced Thursday that it had suspended Louisville’s Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach, Rick Pitino, for the first five games of Atlantic Coast Conference play next season and ordered the program to forfeit what could amount to dozens of victories, including potentially the Cardinals’ 2013 national championship.

The sanctions went above and beyond ones the university self-imposed after it was revealed in 2015 that a former staff member had provided strippers and prostitutes to players and recruits.

The N.C.A.A. also announced an assortment of other penalties, including placing the basketball program on probation for four years, as well as restrictions on scholarships and recruiting.
