KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Top-seeded North Carolina’s quest for an eighth national championship in men’s basketball was derailed by the Auburn Tigers, who defeated the Tar Heels, 97-80, in the semifinals of the N.C.A.A. Midwest Region here on Friday.

North Carolina (29-7) came into the tournament as a No. 1 seed for the 17th time, the most for any team in tournament history. Carolina has been a top seed eight times in 16 seasons under Coach Roy Williams, whose teams have won three national titles, the most recent in 2017.
