Miss. St. to start Fitzgerald, will use other QBs

Nick Fitzgerald will start at quarterback in Mississippi State's season opener against South Alabama, a school spokesperson told ESPN.

Multiple quarterbacks will play, the spokesperson said, adding that veteran backup Damian Williams will see the field during the first quarter.

Fitzgerald, a third-year sophomore, was the primary backup to Dak Prescott last season. Prescott, a fourth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys, broke a litany of school records in his two-plus years as starter.

Fitzgerald completed 11 of his 14 attempts last season with three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
