Miami launches fund to help pay for funeral of player’s mother

The problems on the field of late for the Miami Hurricanes took a back seat late Monday night and early Tuesday morning with the tragic news that the mother of one player passed away.

Dana Smith, the mother of cornerback Artie Burns, was rushed to the hospital Monday night after suffering a heart attack. Dozens of coaches and players, including former coach Al Golden, rushed to be by Burns’ side. Sadly, Smith passed away early Tuesday morning.

The school, using an NCAA exemption that allows them to do such a thing in extreme circumstances, launched a GoFundMe account to help pay for funeral expenses and help raise funds for Smith’s other two children, ages 15 and 12:

We are saddened by the tragedy that struck Artie Burns and his family.
