MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith set the SEC career receiving yards record with his first catch against Ohio State in the national championship game Monday night.
The Heisman Trophy winner had one reception for 15 yards on the opening drive, moving him past Jordan Matthews, who set the record of 3,759 yards at Vanderbilt from 2010-13.
Smith also set the record for most receiving touchdowns in a season in SEC history. He caught his 21st touchdown of the season on a 5-yard reception in the second quarter.
It broke a tie with LSU's Ja'Marr Chase, who set the mark last season.
