The old adage that defense wins championships may very well be true, but as we know in college football, you can't do anything unless you have an explosive offensive that can put points on the board. These five college football offenses may be good enough to be the exceptions to that old rule. Here are the top offenses in the country:
Mike Leach's high-flying offense has guided Washington State to an 8-3 record, and win over Washington would send them to the Pac-12 title game. The rank in the top 10 in the country in both yards (512 per game) and points (42.5 per game), led by quarterback Luke Falk's 3,935 yards and 36 touchdowns.
The lone Group of 5 conference school on this list, the Bulldogs have been lighting up everyone they've played to the tune of 45.8 points per game (second in country) and 541 yards per game (fourth). They are 8-3 and in first place is the C-USA West as a result.
The Sooners might have gotten off to a rough start, but this offense has helped turned their season around, having them as the only undefeated team in Big 12 play. Led by quarterback Baker Mayfield, running back Joe Mixon and wide receiver Dede Westbrook, they rank third in the country in both yards (551 per game) and points (45.3 per game).
Texas Tech has earned their reputation for having one of the best offenses year in and year out, and this year is no different, as they rank eighth in points per game (42.7) and second in yards per game (558). A large part of the credit can be given to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who leads the country with 4,460 passing yards and has 47 total touchdowns.
Despite their struggles against Houston, Lamar Jackson and Louisville are still the most explosive offense in the country. With 3,109 passing yards, 1,367 rushing yards and 47 total TDs, Jackson is clearly the Heisman favorite - but also has the Cardinals leading the country in BOTH yards (559 per game) and scoring (46 points per game).
