It’s widely understood that the NBA’s new national TV contracts will kick in next year, resulting in an unprecedented salary cap increase. A contract that looks bad today will be much more manageable starting next season. As a result, the concept of what a player is “worth” has become a hotly contested issue. However, before we can project the value of players’ contracts in tomorrow’s NBA, we should try and better understand the current relationship between salary and production in the league today.
