Russell Westbrook And The Oklahoma City Thunder Are A Reverse-Engineered Dwight Howard-Era Orlando Magic

You build around what you’ve got.

The concept is simple: find a superstar and build the best team around him that you can. Putting that idea into practice, however, is an ultimately difficult challenge that can be done in a variety of ways.

The best way to go about finding a superstar is to select one with a high pick in the draft (à la Anthony Davis), though if you have a good enough team already, you can lure stars away in free agency (à la Kevin Durant) or by trade (à la Kevin Love). The Oklahoma City Thunder drafted three superstar players in Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden, but traded Harden away and lost Durant in free agency.
