The NBA is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world. The teams that play in it are followed by millions of fans on social media.
Naturally, this does not come as a surprise, as this is something that all sports teams across a variety of disciplines have all been able to achieve, as fans want to get as much content about their favorite teams as possible.
In this blog post, we will take a look at which teams have the most followers on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram in 2022.
Why do fans continue to follow their favorite NBA teams?
As highlighted above, the act of following your favorite sports team on social media is something that almost every person in the world who has an account across the available networks will likely look to do. In fact, for many, it is one of the very first accounts that an individual will look to follow.
So, why do we all do this? There are a number of different reasons why we all do this in our droves, but one easy reason is that we are very passionate about the team or the sport that is being played. We always want to be able to stay on top of the latest news and breaking stories regarding our favorite teams and players/sports leagues. Social media platforms have become the perfect tools that allow us to do this.
What does the number of followers mean?
The number of followers on social media platforms is a good indicator of the popularity of a team. The more followers a team has, the more popular it is. There are many factors that can contribute to a team's popularity. For example, if a team has superstar players, it is likely to be followed by more people. If a team wins a lot of games, that can also make it more popular.
So, which teams are the most popular on social media? Let's take a look.
Los Angeles Lakers
By all accounts, the Los Angeles Lakers are the most followed NBA team on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. As of June 2022, the team has 21,913,628 fans on Facebook, 517K subscribers, and 19.73 million followers on Instagram.
The team is one of the most iconic basketball franchises to have ever existed, and currently holds the record for the most NBA Championships in history, with 17. However, this is a record that could be snapped by the Boston Celtics in the current 2022 NBA Finals.
This year, the final battle for NBA title is between Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors. The series is currently 2-1 in favor of the Boston team, and the NBA odds for title are -175 for Boston Celtics and +143 for Warriors right now.
Naturally, both the Celtics and the Golden State Warriors have experienced a rise in the number of social media interactions that they have received because of their successful NBA 2022 season, however neither were able to make the top three in regard to popularity.
Chicago Bulls
The Chicago Bulls is another NBA organization that is known throughout the world for being rather iconic. This will have been helped by the dynasty that was created when Michael Jordan was coming through the game in the 1990s and the recent airing of the successful “The Last Dance” series on Netflix.
Given the popularity of the franchise, the Bulls are the second-most liked team on Facebook in regard to fans, with 17,546,199 fans. Additionally, they have 250k subscribers on YouTube, and a further 8.2 million followers on Instagram.
Miami Heat
The third-most liked team on Facebook is the Miami Heat, and yet again, they are an organization that is known around the world and has become very popular with fans in the U.S. and from even further afield.
According to data, the Heat has 17,546,199 fans on Facebook, 140K subscribers on YouTube, and 5.6 million Instagram followers.
Final Thoughts
Of course, it can be argued that the number of followers, likes, and subscribers is not always a true reflection of how popular a team is, however those figures can always be considered to be a good indicator. Nonetheless, it is hardly surprising that the three teams found to be at the top are ranked as they are.
