Carin Gabarra remembers when girls playing soccer – or any sport – wasn’t "fashionable.’’ Now, Gabarra proudly points out, that narrative is no more.
"Now they’re applauded; some of the most well-known female athletes are United States soccer players,’’ Gabarra said. "So it’s come a long way and I’m super happy to have been a part of all that.’’
Gabarra, the head women’s soccer coach at Navy for the last 25 years, has spent her life on the pitch as both a player and a coach. She was the Golden Ball recipient at the 1991 Women’s World Cup and helped the United States secure a gold medal during the 1996 Olympics.
