Navy, Tulsa look to take charge of West Division

There was some apprehension on the part of long-time fans when Navy joined the American Athletic Conference. After 135 years as an independent, the Midshipmen were venturing into the unknown.

It was widely acknowledged by those associated with the program that the ability to massage the schedule was a big reason for Navy's success starting in 2003. Athletic director Chet Gladchuk had talked about a scheduling philosophy of having four games in which the Midshipmen would be favored, four it would be an underdog and four that were tossups.

Building a schedule in such a manner increased the chance of Navy winning six games and earning a bowl berth.
