Navy’s Varsity Offshore Sailing Team had never captured the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup regatta in 10 previous attempts.
That is due largely to the fact the event is held in early March, making it difficult for the Midshipmen to do much advance preparation.
This year, Navy made sure it got plenty of practice time — a decision borne out of necessity and desire. It was not necessarily pleasant performing manuevers on the Chesapeake Bay during January and February, but the effort paid off in the end.
Senior skipper Teddy Papenthein led the way as Navy ended a decade worth of frustration by winning the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup, held last weekend on the Pacific Ocean off Palos Verdes.
