There were high expectations for the Navy men’s basketball team coming into this campaign. The Midshipmen showed in their opener Wednesday afternoon that the preseason hype was warranted.
Junior swingman John Carter Jr. scored 17 points on the strength of four 3-pointers as Navy defeated a talented George Washington team, 78-71, in a game the Midshipmen never trailed.
Senior point guard Cam Davis contributed 15 points and seven assists for the Midshipmen, who shot a sizzling 48.4 percent from the floor. Junior forward Richard Njoku added 12 points and five rebounds, and sophomore forward Tyler Nelson made his first career start and also scored 12 points playing before a smattering of midshipmen in an otherwise empty Alumni Hall.
