One of the most intense position battles during Navy spring football camp came at fullback, where a group of four young players all showed flashes.
Nelson Smith, the projected starter at fullback, got this spring and did not participate in full-contact drills toward the end. The 5-foot-9, 212-pound rising junior made seven starts last season and finished as the team’s third-leading rusher with 411 yards.
With Smith sitting out the last two intra-squad scrimmage situations, it gave a group of current sophomores and freshmen an opportunity to show what they could do. Current sophomore Jon Lee along with current freshmen James Harris, Isaac Ruoss and Jamale Carothers all did some good things over the course of 14 spring practices.
