Defensive coordinator Brian Newberry used the word “disappointed” numerous times when discussing his unit’s performance against SMU Saturday night.
The well-balanced Mustangs amassed 555 yards of total offense during a 51-37 drubbing of the Midshipmen.
It was a setback for the Navy defense, which had shown improvement over the previous three games against Temple, East Carolina and Houston.
“Obviously, really disappointed. Disappointed in a lot of things,” Newberry said Tuesday during his weekly news conference.
“I said going into the game that I thought we had made some strikes in previous weeks and we needed to take another big step forward in order to be successful [against SMU].
