Navy baseball is turning back the clock Saturday -- all the way to 1893.
Most throwback promotions pick a decade – such as the 1980s or '90s – to celebrate. That was the suggestion of an intern in the marketing department of the Naval Academy Athletic Association.
“I liked the concept, but was thinking we should do something more original and unique,” said Alex Toltzis, an assistant director for marketing and promotions said.
After some more brainstorming, the staff settled on commemorating 1893, which was the inaugural year for Navy baseball. Virtually no information exists for that time period so all that is known about the first Navy baseball team is that it compiled a 6-4 record.
