Naval Academy midshipman dies at 21 from leukemia

A Naval Academy midshipman and Navy club hockey player died Friday from complications of leukemia.

Midshipman 1st Class Jason Jablonski, 21, of Orchard Park, New York, died surrounded by family and fellow midshipmen at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, according to a news release. He was first diagnosed in August and was receiving treatment at the Bethesda-based hospital.

Jablonski's condition became worse over Thanksgiving weekend and his immune system "surrendered to an infection," the academy said.

While at the academy, Jablonski was a member of the 13th company and the men's club hockey team.
