It was frigid, not hot; cloudy, not sunny; aluminum bats were used and not wooden ones, and the Baltimore Orioles were still hundreds of miles away in Florida prepping for Thursday’s home opener.
But there was still competitive baseball at Orioles Park at Camden Yards Sunday as Navy hosted Army in a Patriot League doubleheader.
Throw in a short shower of snow flurries during the first game, and the conditions were more suited for football across the street at M&T Bank Stadium than a midseason service academy showdown.
Under the tutelage of former Orioles farmhand Jim Foster, Army swept both games, winning the opener, 5-3, in a scheduled seven-inning game that went 10 innings.
