Sixteen years after he retired from coaching football, 35 years after he left the sideline at the U.S. Naval Academy, George Welsh is still very much in the game.
Welsh, now 83, was honored at last Saturday's Virginia-Louisville game in Charlottesville, 25 years after he won the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year award for leading the Cavaliers to yet another winning season.
He still lives in Charlottesville, where he coached for 19 seasons and engineered 13 straight campaigns of at least seven victories. The program hadn't enjoyed that level of success since the days before players wore helmets.
