Charley Toomey will never forget the day his dreams of playing Division I college lacrosse were dealt a significant blow.
Toomey was a junior at Martin Spalding High when he was called to the main office to meet with a visiting college coach. Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw did not pull any punches when dismissing the youngster as soon as he arrived.
“Coach Shillinglaw said that Delaware would never recruit a goaltender from a B Conference school so you can just go back to class,” Toomey recalled.
Toomey was not about to have his lacrosse future determined solely on the basis of the level at which he competed so he decided to transfer to the Boys’ Latin School in Baltimore.
