Marsell Colbert left Annapolis in 1989 to play basketball at North Idaho College and wound up staying, a turn of events he never would have predicted beforehand.
Colbert had his junior college career cut short, but wound up building a life in the relatively remote outpost of Coeur d’ Alene. The Annapolis High graduate raised two sons, became a respected basketball coach and ultimately made history.
Colbert has led Genesis Prep, a small school powerhouse in Idaho, to consecutive state championships. When Genesis Prep defended its 1A Division II state title this past season, it prompted a reporter with The Spokesman-Review newspaper in nearby Spokane, Washington,, to conduct some research.
