ESPN released its preseason BPI rankings Tuesday morning, with the new college basketball season tipping off later this week.
Preseason BPI is based upon four main factors: the percentage of returning players, past performance, recruiting rankings and coaches’ performance. The BPI has become an increasingly important metric for the NCAA Tournament selection committee creating its field of 68 teams every March. Not to be confused with RPI, the BPI is a far more respected ranking system than the heavily flawed RPI.
Here is a glance at the Mountain West team rankings:
National Rank | Team | BPI Offense Rank | BPI Defense Rank |
46 | San Diego State | 99 | 12 |
75 | Nevada | 87 | 72 |
78 | New Mexico | 67 | 109 |
85 | Fresno State | 102 | 87 |
86 | Boise State | 84 | 112 |
144 | Air Force | 103 | 203 |
162 | UNLV | 215 | 113 |
191 | Utah State | 106 | 289 |
209 | Wyoming | 160 | 251 |
214 | Colorado State | 179 | 252 |
294 | San Jose State | 331 | 206 |
San Diego State is the clear frontrunner, but it should be worth noting that five of the 11 Mountain West teams are ranked in the top 100.
