The perception of size in the NHL has always been a conversation, especially when it comes to the NHL Entry Draft. For years, organizations would look more to the player’s height and weight, sometimes ignoring the clear skill set. The Montreal Canadiens have fallen victim of this mentality in the last decade with Michael McCarron likely being the most recent decision.
McCarron has serious size standing at 6’6″ and 229 pounds, but the skating and skill set were seriously lacking. The Habs were coming off an early playoff exit at the hands of the Ottawa Senators who pushed them around all series, and they took to the draft to fix that issue.
