Who saw this one coming? When Al Montoya started to practice with the Montreal Canadiens, it was a possible sign for the end of Antti Niemi. The Habs originally acquired the goaltender after Montoya was forced to missed time with a concussion he sustained in the team’s latest game against the Winnipeg Jets.
What Habs fans didn’t predict was how steady Niemi would look as the team’s backup. Based on this news, Marc Bergevin liked what he brought to the table and saw an opportunity to make a move.
Montoya will now be joining the Edmonton Oilers and the Habs will be receiving a conditional fourth-round pick at this year’s draft.
