Every year, the Canadiens wrap up the first phase of training camp by playing a scrimmage while they have enough players to make two teams, before sending several of their prospects and invitees off to begin preparing for their seasons.
It usually also heralds the start of the pre-season slate, but with this year’s compressed preparatory schedule, half the players played a game — their first in several months — last night in Toronto. It means that one team today (Team White) has shaken off a bit of the rust that built up over the off-season, while the players on the other squad (Team Red) are getting their first action.
