Andrei Markov named to initial Team Russia World Cup of Hockey Roster

Andrei Markov was named this morning as one of three defenders and 16 players in total on Team Russia's initial selection for the World Cup of Hockey.

The elder statesman and general of the Montreal Canadiens has a gold in 2008 and two bronze medals in 2005 and 2007 as part of the Russian team at the World Championships. Markov was also part of the Russian 2004 World Cup team.

Markov made his senior debut for Russia in 1999 at the World Championships in Norway.

Markov has 34 (4G, 30A) points in 63 games with the Canadiens this season and while there have been concerns about his age and play, he has been part of the core that Michael Therrien leans on.
