UFC president Dana White isn’t all that interested in adding a 165-pound division to his promotion, but filling the gap between lightweight and welterweight is necessary. Here’s why.

Weight cutting has, of course, become a major issue in the sport of mixed martial arts. At least one fighter missing weight per event has become routine. At this point in time, all fighters on a card making weight is a storyline in itself.

According to the California State Athletic Commission, in the UFC and Bellator, lightweight sees the highest average weight cut in terms of percentage of body weight.
