As usual with the UFC, there hasn’t been a ton of clarity in regards to their titles. Usually it’s quite straightforward, but when it comes to interim belts or guys becoming champions in two divisions, the waters start to get a tad muddy.
When the situation involved Conor McGregor and Tony Ferguson, the two men were stripped of their respective belts as soon as the UFC 223 fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Al Iaquinta began. A new champion was crowned, and things went forward.
In the case of Daniel Cormier though, it’s a little different. Cormier picked up the UFC heavyweight title by stopping Stipe Miocic at UFC 226.
