The 41-year-old former ADCC gold medalist and two-weight-class UFC title challenger from Sao Paulo remains one of the game’s elite submission artists, a lesson Lyman Good learned the hard way in their main-card welterweight bout at UFC Fortaleza.
Maia used a rear-naked choke to become the first competitor ever to stop the former Bellator welterweight champion, getting the job done at the 2:38 mark of the opening round.
“Yeah that’s my strategy, that’s my strength,” Maia said through an interpreter. “He’s a very good opponent, but that was a good submission.”
Maia wasted little time taking Good’s back, and from there working into position for the choke.
